Diesel Generator Sets for Cold Climate Applications (Russia Winter Conditions)

Custom cold climate diesel generator sets built for Russia winter. Factory tested with antifreeze to avoid freeze cracking. Optional water jacket heater, parking heater, fuel heating and -45°C Deep Sea low temperature controllers for reliable power in extreme cold weather.

Diesel Generator Sets for Cold Climate Applications (Russia Winter Conditions)

High-latitude regions such as Russia experience extremely cold winters, with temperatures dropping to -30°C to -45°C or even lower in Siberia. Under such harsh freezing conditions, diesel generator sets must be specially engineered for cold resistance.

A common production shortcut among some manufacturers is using plain water for pressure testing and leakage inspection instead of antifreeze, to cut production costs.

Water expands by more than 10% once frozen. Residual water trapped inside cylinder blocks, radiators and cooling pipelines cannot be fully drained. During long overland and sea transport to cold regions, the leftover water freezes and cracks the engine block and cooling components, causing permanent damage to the generator set.

For all generator units supplied to cold climate markets, we strictly complete the whole pressure test and leak detection with qualified antifreeze liquid, never tap water. This eliminates the risk of freezing and cracking during transit and storage.

We provide tiered cold-resistant configurations according to actual site conditions.

  1. Water Jacket Heater
The standard cold-resistant accessory for fixed generator sets with continuous mains power supply. It keeps coolant at a stable temperature, maintains engine preheating status and reduces cranking resistance.

  2. Parking Heater
For mobile generator stations and sites without mains electricity supply. The parking heater runs independently on fuel to circulate and warm up the coolant, so the unit can stay preheated in remote field locations with no external power.

  3. Extra Heating Components for Extreme Cold below -35°C

• Intake Air Heater Plug: Preheats intake air to ensure sufficient compression temperature for successful cold starting.

• Oil Sump Heater: Reduces engine oil viscosity in freezing weather and guarantees lubrication during startup.

• Diesel Fuel Heating System: Prevents diesel waxing and blockage of fuel pipelines and filters.

• Battery Heating Blanket: Maintains battery temperature and preserves cranking capacity at low temperatures.

• Space Heater: Raises ambient temperature inside container or shelter to protect electrical parts.

  1. Low-temperature Controller Selection
Deep Sea standard controllers work reliably down to -30°C. For Russia’s extreme cold zones, we select the low-temperature version, which can operate steadily down to -45°C. All electronic components are screened and reinforced for ultra-low temperature environments.

With standardized antifreeze testing and a complete set of cold-start accessories, our diesel generator sets can reliably deliver emergency and prime power supply in mining, construction and remote projects across cold climate areas.

FAQ for Cold Climate Diesel Generators

Q1. Why do you test generator sets with antifreeze instead of water?

A1. Water left inside the cooling system will freeze during shipping to cold regions such as Russia. Frozen water expands and cracks engine blocks and radiators. Antifreeze testing removes this risk completely, even for long-distance sea and land transportation.

Q2. What is the difference between a water jacket heater and a parking heater?

A2. A water jacket heater needs mains power and is mostly used for fixed standby generators. A parking heater runs independently on diesel fuel. It is designed for mobile power stations and remote sites where mains power is unavailable.

Q3. What extra heating parts are required for temperatures below -35°C?

A3. You may need intake heater plugs, oil sump heaters, diesel fuel heating systems, battery heating blankets and space heaters. Combined, these systems solve oil thickening, diesel waxing and weak battery discharge problems.

Q4. Can a standard Deep Sea controller work at -40°C?

A4. The standard Deep Sea controller has a working limit of -30°C. For -35°C to -45°C environments, the low-temperature Deep Sea controller must be selected. Its internal electronic components are built for ultra-low temperature operation.

Q5. Is a mobile diesel generator for Russia winter the same as a regular generator?

A5. No. Russian winter generator units require full cold climate preparation, including antifreeze factory testing, independent preheating systems, low-temperature batteries, fuel heating and low-temperature controllers.
